Welcome to Year 4

Class Information:
  • Mr Richardson is the class teacher and Mrs Buckley and Mrs Costa are the class teaching assistants.

  • It has been great to get back into school and everyone has been ready and keen to continue learning. Please feel free to contact us with any queries or questions either on Dojo or on:

  • To support work in class, we ask that children read every night where possible. The key to this is little and often so 10 minutes per night would be ideal.

  • Spellings will be sent out weekly and these will link with the specific vocabulary we will be using in school, so they are very relevant to the childrens learning. These will be sent out Fridays to be learnt for the following Friday.

  • Times tables are a big focus this year and children are encouraged to practise these regularly at home.

  • Other homework may be issued over the duration of the year.

  • Many children in Year 4 are free-readers and will enjoy reading independently. Please encourage your child to experience a range of reading that includes both fiction and non-fiction as well as newspapers and magazine style text.

  • All children will be provided with a book to take home from school and it is expected that this remains at home until they have finished with it. Please aim to listen to them read at least 3 times per week. This doesn’t have to be the book they have taken home.

  • Children will read every day in school as well as opportunities to rad to staff on a one to one basis.

  • Much of the reading sessions in Year 4 will be in guided reading.

  • Please let us know if there has been a particular author or book your child has really enjoyed, as we are constantly looking to widen our book corner with books that can hook others into reading.

  • Our PE day for the Autumn term is Friday; please could you ensure that your child has their PE kit in school for this day. Many children leave their PE kits here all week and they are sent home every half term. Keeping a pair of trainers in school where possible would enable our children to be ready for any physical education.

Classroom Routines:
  • We have daily sessions of reading, English and Maths. The children will be split into groups according to our assessments of their ability.

  • We place a big emphasis on children working collaboratively within lessons.

  • Children are provided with all the equipment that they may need for their lessons so there is no need for them to bring pencil cases in.

  • Please contact us on the yard if we are available or write a short note.

  • Please can you discourage children from bringing games, toys or other possessions into school other than if asked. We cannot look for broken, swapped or lost possessions.
