Welcome to Reception Class

Welcome to the Reception Class. Miss Baskeyfield is the full time class teacher with Mrs Lockett as our full time teaching assistant.

We are  looking forward to working together so that we have an exciting and productive year.  We hope that you enjoy the new challenges and approaches to learning that Reception has to offer!  As we begin this new school year we would like to familiarise you with how things work in Class R so you can encourage your child to be organised, independent and support them in their learning.

Class Information:

Homework:
  • To support work in class, we ask that children read every night.

  • Any homework will be uploaded to Class Dojo.

Phonics:

Reading:
  • During the coming weeks your child will receive their first at home reading book and reading diary. The children have a daily phonics lesson which involves reading skills and practice; additionally we have shared reading activities, individual reading and promote reading for enjoyment and information at school. The 1:1 reading with your child at home is really beneficial- it gives your child a chance to practice what they have learned, build up their reading knowledge and learn about how books work- it is an essential part of their learning.

  • We often try and slip in additional reading during the day - For this reason please ensure that your child's reading book is in class every day. Thank you for your support.

Reading Books:
  • The reading books we send home will be matched to your child's phonics/reading level. The books will contain simple decodable words that children will blend such as c-a-t and also tricky words, e.g. the, go, to. Please try to find a quiet time (without distractions) when you can share this book with your child. Talk to them about the pictures, help them if they are finding it tricky, discuss with them if they liked the book or their favourite part, the illustrations etc. When they have finished the book, please write a comment in their reading diary, return them to school and we will change it for a new one on their reading day. Please keep on reading other books to your child as it helps them build up vocabulary, story patterns and knowledge of how books work.

PE:
  • Our PE lessons are on Mondays and Wednesdays. Please

bring your PE kit to school.

Snacks:

  • Children may bring fruit from home or we will provide fruit
    for morning snack.

General Reminders:
  • Please ensure to label ALL of your child’s clothing. If things get misplaced it helps us to match the item to the child quickly before things get lost or muddled with another child’s clothing.

  • Please ensure your child has a water bottle in school that is clearly labelled. Children are able to drink from this throughout the day and it can be

      refilled throughout the day.

  • In Reception it is helpful if your child does have a change of pants/socks/trousers/skirt in case of any mishaps.

Classroom Routines:
  • Typically a day will consist of the following: Morning: Registration and Welcome, Little Wandle (Phonics), Child Initiated Learning, Snack Time, Whole Class Maths followed by Child Initiated Learning or Adult- directed activity. Lunch Break. Afternoon: Busy Fingers, Literacy or Topic session followed by either Child Initiated Learning or Adult- directed activity, Story time, Home time. The weekly timetable includes PE, PSHE and Music sessions.

  • Children are provided with all of the equipment that they may need for their activities  so there is no need for them to bring pencil cases in.

  • You can contact us via Class Dojo or speak to us on the playground.

  • Please can you discourage children from bringing games, toys or other possessions into school other than if asked. We cannot look for broken, swapped or lost possessions.
